Because of our trip to England, we had to harvest whatever was ready. Well, there wasn’t much—but then again, who’s surprised after that summer heat? No apples, no plums, no tomatoes, no peppers, no carrots, and the few green beans were barely enough for a couple of meals. Not a single fruit from ten eggplant plants! We did get a few ripe pumpkins from the many plants we grew, though, and we’re storing them in the cellar. The pear trees bore enough fruit to preserve, and we also froze some slices; we’ll use those for pear cake in the winter.
