The July rains are now followed by the August heat. After the tropical feeling created by the high humidity, some plants are blooming much too early: the bearded iris, asters, and tall Jerusalem artichokes normally only begin blooming in September. Goldenrod, agapanthus, and thallictrum are in time, and the belladonna lily, propagated from bulbs from the Azores, is blooming for the first time here.
We can harvest the aronia berries and the greens we bought as seedlings under the “kohlrabi” label—a surprise!
The apples from our halved apple tree are developing vigorously, and the yard-long beans we were able to save from the snails are also starting to swarm—let’s hope we can still harvest them!
