A chance discovery this morning: next to the guest room window, wings wide open (11 cm), sat a peacock butterfly. It is one of the largest butterflies in Central Europe and is on the Red List of Threats. The Weinviertel region is the northernmost limit of its range. Due to its short lifespan of about three days, the chances of seeing this magnificent creature are very slim. We had one about 20 years ago, and about 30 years ago, I saw my first one near Mistelbach.
Surprise the next day: a female had joined us!!! What a rare moment.
